Bicycling In Downtown: A Bike-Friendly Environment
Launched in 2011, the City’s Blue Bikes program has been a huge success, with tens of thousands of Blue Bikes trips originating or terminating in our district annually. Dozens of Blue Bikes kiosks are distributed throughout urban Boston, including several in the DBA area alone; please visit here for a system map.
The Blue Bikes program is especially apt for our neighborhood, which features six separated bike lanes, an additional four buffered bike lanes, and one contraflow bike lane. To review the City’s bike-lane network map, please visit here.
At the heart of it all you will find the Downtown Crossing Pedestrian Zone. Comprised of Bromfield Street, Summer Street Plaza, Washington Street (from Temple Place to Milk Street), and Winter Street, it is one of the nation’s oldest auto-restricted pedestrian corridors, having been established in 1978. Site of many year-round destination events, it is traversed by thousands of pedestrians daily. Bicycling is prohibited everywhere within the pedestrian zone; for the safety of all, we kindly ask cyclists to comply with the regulations.
