Safety & Risk Assessment

Communication & Information Sharing

police

The Downtown Boston Business Improvement District (BID) works closely and communicates daily with our public safety partners (the Boston Police Department and MBTA Transit Police), along with BID member security personnel (such as the Emerson College and Suffolk University Police Departments), to communicate safety challenges and identify strategic safety programs.

This collaborative partnership facilitates not only the useful exchange of information but also the development of safety programs and initiatives to mitigate the changing threats in an urban environment. Our close working relationships with the Mayor’s Office, as well as the City of Boston's Offices of Public Safety and Emergency Management, provide information and resources to allow us to be better prepared to recognize and respond to new risks.

Working with our stakeholder community, the BID works to promote a vibrant community that is a safe and welcoming to all those who live, work and visit here.

BID Safety Programs & Initiatives

  • Boston Police Security Camera Program
The BID partners with the Boston Police Department and various BID businesses to purchase and install a network of security cameras in the BID's service area.

  • Incident Data Reporting
The BID tracks incident safety data and crime trends to determine resource allocations and safety interventions. We work closely with all partners to review the data and share that data with our members as needed.

  • Safety and Risk Assessments
The BID reviews current programs and events, developing safety plans and protocols to mitigate identified risks.

BID Safety Meetings

  • Neighborhood Safety Meetings and Briefings
Held quarterly, these meetings with public safety partners, security and campus public safety professionals, BID property owners, managers, businesses and residents, provide attendees with the latest neighborhood safety updates, along with briefings on BID programs & initiatives.

  • Law Enforcement & Security Manager Coffee Meetups
These periodic meetups provide an opportunity to collaborate and forge partnerships among the BID-area law enforcement and security management professionals.

  • Information Sessions/Forums with City, State and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies
These periodic sessions, hosted within the BID area, provide an opportunity for BID area security professionals to receive training on the latest safety and security topics, including bomb threat assessments, active shooter scenarios, and critical infrastructure protection.

BID Emergency Alert System

This system is used to notify security personnel, property owners and managers to potential or actual emergencies in or around the Downtown Boston BID area.

The BID Alert System sends alerts via voice message, SMS text and email, alerting you to potential public safety emergencies, hazardous weather events, major traffic disruptions, and other critical infrastructure failures.

To be enrolled in the system, or if you have any questions or would like further information on the emergency alert system, please contact Tucker Husband, Safety Manager at the Downtown Boston BID, at [email protected].
